Uber makes value by connecting the mobility and delivery of various stakeholders on a sharing economy platform. I researched Uber’s current business and worked on planning a new service that leverages their existing business model.

Overview

Uber Technologies, Inc. (Uber) is an American mobility as a service provider. It is based in San Francisco with operations in approximately 72 countries and 10,500 cities. Its services include ride-hailing, food delivery (Uber Eats), package delivery, couriers, freight transportation. In the fourth quarter of 2021, Uber had 118 million monthly active users worldwide and generated an average of 19 million trips per day. In the United States, as of January 2022, Uber had a 71% market share for ride-sharing and a 27% market share for food delivery.

Uber’s business is based on a multi sided platform system that smoothly matches multiple service providers and buyers. Uber can do business by leveraging independent operators, providing only technology systems without any facilities.

Connecting a little job opportunity

When you want to work for a little while, such as part-time, it is difficult to find a workplace and go through the procedures and interviews. It is hard to get information on workplaces. On the other hand, it is difficult to find someone to do a small job, such as an elderly person who needs help with housework, or a company that needs someone to do a one-day job. If there were more opportunities for people to work in their free time and with more ease and security, more people would have the chance to work.

Marketplace for Temporary Employment

Specializing in temporary, simple jobs, Uber’s platform conveniently matches workers looking for temporary work with customers and companies looking for help, and promote accessibility and transparency of small work. Users can easily and quickly find and request a temp staff when they suddenly need one. Information on various freelancers can be viewed on a single app, and users can choose one based on ratings and reviews.

Business Model

Uber earns revenue from commissions from suppliers and delivery fees from customers through job matching. The main resources in this business are the systems and app technology, and those administrative and labor costs are the main costs. The business will provide transparency and reliability through ratings, as well as enhance the convenience of the service, transforming small jobs and gig work into easier and more casual. The goal is to improve the quality and diversification of gig work. Uber will create new ways of working by leveraging human resource pools and employer data.
